James Earley, Hemi-Linked (Detail)

As part of the 14th Belgrade Irish Festival, in collaboration with Silosi Beograd, the Gaia Movement, and with the support of the Embassy of Ireland in Serbia, Irish artist James Earley created Hemi-Linked (Detail), a 10 × 10 metresite-specific mural located within the Port of Belgrade at the entrance to the Silosi complex.

Created in response to its surroundings, the mural explores the many ways in which water connects humanity; historically, physically, culturally, and symbolically. Drawing inspiration from the nearby Danube and the industrial landscape of the Port of Belgrade, the work reflects on the hydrosphere as the shared body of water linking cities, continents, and communities. It addresses themes of travel, migration, cultural exchange, ecological awareness, and the origins of water on Earth, inviting viewers to consider the interconnectedness of both people and the natural world.

An important aspect of the mural is the cultural dialogue between Belgrade and Dublin, two cities shaped by rivers, ports, and centuries of exchange. Earley's distinctive visual language combines contemporary muralism, graffiti, and graphic design with the rich tradition of Irish stained glass. Rooted in a family craft passed down through generations, the work transforms the wall into a contemporary stained-glass composition, paying tribute to cultural heritage and artistic craftsmanship.

The mural also features the shamrock, one of Ireland's most recognizable national symbols, representing connection, community, and hope.

Positioned at the entrance to Silosi, Hemi-Linked serves as a visual gateway to the complex and stands as a lasting symbol of international cultural collaboration. Its realization also marks the beginning of Walking Art District of Belgrade, an initiative dedicated to expanding the creative landscape of Silosi through new public artworks and site-specific artistic interventions.
